Road trip adventure through Montenegro
Montenegro’s stunning landscapes and rich history make for an amazing road trip destination. The best way to explore this beautiful country is by renting a car. It’s cheaper and considerably flexible. If you decide to rent a car then you can use this article as a guide on where to visit in Montenegro.
The beauty of a road trip through Montenegro is that despite its small size, the country offers a rich variety of experiences, from the sunny beaches of the Adriatic Sea to the snow-capped mountains of the Durmitor range.

Kotor
Starting from the coastal town of Kotor, known for its fortified city and stunning bay. The bay, surrounded by towering cliffs, is incredibly scenic and dotted with beautiful coastal towns. One of these is Perast, a charming town with historic churches and palaces. From here, you can take a boat trip to the artificial islands of Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George, then head to the blue cave for a swim.
You could also drive down to the old town of Kotor and explore its medieval architecture, including streets, houses, churches, and palaces.
You could take a hike to San Giovanni fortress, the fortress is hard to miss if you visit the old town, the hike takes about an hour and 30 minutes, and the fortress gives you a stunning view of the entire city.
Herceg Novi
Next you could drive down to the Western entrance to the Bay of Kotor to the city of Herceg Novi, It’s not really a busy city and The city is surrounded by mountains and you can go skiing during the late spring. You should check out the old town of Herceg Novi to see the clock tower, the church, Forte Mare fortress which has a 4 euro entrance fee Kanli Kula fortress, etc.
Zabljak
Next, drive up to Zabljak—the mountain settlement in the Balkans. There you can visit the Durmitor National Park, if you visit during the winter season you can find lots of Ski resorts, and if you travel in the warmer season you can go rafting on the mountain river Tara, The Tara canyon is the deepest canyon in Europe, you could go for a hike or mountain climbing in the canyon, check out the Black lake and the tara bridge.
Ulcinj
Ulcinj is one of the most stunning cities located in the Southen part of Montenegro, home to the longest beach in Montenegro and famous for its olive groves. There you could explore the old town, where you can see the Balsic Tower see the Slave Square and visit the Pirate Museum, you could also check out the stunning beaches,
Ulcinj is home to the biggest beach in Montenegro called Velika Plaza, it has over 13km of coastline covered in sand. You could go kitesurfing or play volleyball on the beach, it’s a massive beach and it has plenty of room for crowds.
There is also Ada Bojana which is the only nudist beach in Montenegro, the beach is beautiful and worth a day trip, but there is a 6 euro fee per car.
You can also check out Valdanos beach, the cove valdanos has lots of olive trees some of which are over 800 years old, the beach was once a part of an ex-military Yugoslavian reservation. You can go snorkeling or kayaking on the beach and discover the beautiful marine life.
Podgorica
This is considered the youngest capital city in Europe, most people don’t stay here for long because according to the locals: there’s nothing much to do here, it’s worth spending at least one day in the city. You can check out Vodopad Nijagara (Cievna waterfall) best to visit during spring, You should also visit the cathedral church of Christ’s Resurrection, and Sastavci Park which is the most popular recreational center in the city.
Budva
Budva is one of the most vibrant cities in Montenegro, most tourists visiting Montenegro visit Budva, the infrastructure is more developed, and many beautiful places to visit in the city including the infamous Sveti Stefan resort. The beaches here are clean and well-maintained.
You can walk down to the old town of Budva, soak in beautiful views and narrow passages if you’re into history, you could do a guided tour of the old town which shouldn’t cost more than 10 euros. you can also visit the ruins of Mogren fortress which is one kilometer away from the city of Budva, you can view the city from here. You can also visit some of the most famous beaches in the city like Jaz Beach, Slavik Beach, or Mogren Beach. And of course, you should also visit the Sveti Stefan (Saint Stefan) resort.
Tivat
Finally, wind down your road trip with a visit to the city of Tivat, the city has beautiful views, neat beaches, and of course, the only airport on the coast. If you’re a history nerd you could visit the Yugoslavia Consulate, which is a memory museum of the Yugoslavia period, or visit Gornja Lastva. Tivat also has some beaches although it’s not considered a beach city. You can check out the Waikiki beach resort which might be one of the best beaches in Tivat or Plaža Ponta beach.
